Formal Blog #2--Thinking Critically

Research is very important in our every day lives. The more you research and study something, the more you know about that topic. Knowing more about a certain thing will help you to understand it better. When it comes to psychology the more you research a person and know about their everyday lives you might be able to understand why they are doing the things they do.

The research I found using psyblog was titled Sit Up Straight! Be Confident! I found this to be very interesting because studies show that if you sit up straight you will have a higher self confidence. This interests me because my self confidence isn't very good and I have a tendency to slouch when I am sitting. When you are sitting up straight you will think better, more positive thoughts; versus sitting down you become a more negative type person. Another interesting fact in the article was that sitting up straight all the time is actually considered to be bad for your back. I always thought slouching was bad, that was an interesting fact i saw.

While reading this chapter, i learned about hindsight bias. Hindsight bias is also known as the I-knew-it-all-along phenomenon. To explain this try to unscramble the letters WREAT, unscrambled it makes the word WATER. If you just try to unscramble the letters without knowing the answer it will take an average of 3 minutes. However, once you know the answer hindsight makes it seem so easy and obvious.

Another thing about this chapter is the different ways to study people. One way is by the case studies. In a case study, you examine something or someone in depth. You study them carefully to describe why humans do the things we do. Case studies can also show us what can happen. However, case studies are not always 100% accurate; they do suggest some ideas while not fully discovering truth in everybody.

Naturalistic observation is the third descriptive method to record behavior. Naturalistic observation takes place in a normal environment. For example, scientists might be studying something dealing with an animal such as a monkey. Using the naturalistic observations, the scientist will head out into the jungle in search of a monkey in its natural habitat. They will then record their observations and come to conclusions about the monkey. One thing about naturalistic observation that isn't always good is: it doesn't take into account other controlling factors in life that may influence behaviors.

  1. I totally agree with your statement "When it comes to psychology the more you research a person and know about their everyday lives you might be able to understand why they are doing the things they do." Just think, when you live with your mom and dad, most of the time you think the way that they do. An individual can usually see a side of an arguement or story if the individual actually lived or studied it. For example, many people (including myself) don't see how hard it is for people living in inner cities and being involved with gangs to pack up, leave, and "start a new life," but if one actually lived it, they might think differently.

I also found the fact that sitting up straight all of the time can actually be bad on your back quite astonishing! I would like to see some research for that hypothesis/theory!

  2. Danielle you really caught my attention when you were talking about your article that you read. It was interesting to find out that when you sit up straight you have a higher self confidence which is good to know. I tend to slouch as well a lot and I try my hardest to not because I knew it would give you a bad back. Now that I know it will help with my self confidence I will try and be more aware of it. So I guess I owe you a thanks haha. But who would have thought psychology played a part into your position of sitting.
